Pier Vellinga



Pier is an Advisor to Anterra Capital.  Pier is a Professor at the University of Wageningen - a top tier research institute in the Agricultural & Food Sciences, Plant & Animal Sciences, and Environment & Ecology fields. His current focus is on Climate Change and its Societal Implications in the field of Water and Energy. With over 30 years experience in climate change and related environmental matters, Pier has held several roles at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, including Professor (Climate Change), Director (Institute for Environmental Studies), and Dean (Earth and Life Sciences Faculty). Before joining the Vrije Universiteit, Pier was a special advisor to the Dutch Minister of Environment on international CO2 policies.

Pier has held several key leadership roles in the climate change arena, including Chairman and Scientific Director of the National Research Program on Climate Change response measures; Supervisory Board member of the Netherlands Development Finance Company (FMO Bank); Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the National Sea Research Institute (NIOZ at Texel); Board member of Urgenda - a Dutch NGO active in the promotion and demonstration of resource efficiency and sustainability; Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel of the Global Environment Facility of the World Bank, UNEP and UNDP. Pier was also one of the initiators and first Bureau Members of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Pier holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering and a PhD in Technical Sciences from the Technical University in Delft. He is also renowned author to several books and articles on the topic of environment and climate.
